  • Moore College BD or BTh
  • A bachelor’s degree in theology from an approved college affiliated with the ACT. The degree must include study of the Greek text of the New Testament at level III—i.e. study taken over three years amounting to approximately 200 verses of the Greek New Testament—and Theology studies at Level III
  • Possession of a qualification of equivalent standard

If your first language is not English, or you have not completed a degree in English medium, an IELTS score of 7.0 or better is required in the reading and writing segments and 6.5 or better in the other segments. TOEFL scores are also accepted.

If you are not a Moore College or ACTh graduate
  • Depending on the content of your bachelor’s degree, you may be required to do a preliminary year involving:
    • A level III BD biblical unit in the original language
    • One other level III BD unit in a discipline in which the applicant’s degree is not strong
    • Biblical Theology
    • Greek (based on Greek 2 and Luke exegesis) where appropriate.
  • You will need to have an interview with the Director of Postgraduate Studies.

His report to the Postgraduate Committee incorporates criteria based on those set out in the College’s Selection Policy. The Registrar is responsible to review the academic qualifications of all applicants. Admission is based on the Postgraduate Committee’s consideration of the Director’s report and the academic qualifications of the applicant. It recommends admission to the Board of Studies which in turn makes a recommendation to the Governing Board of the College for those who have not previously been enrolled in the College.

Other admission requirements
  • Candidates who are more than five years from completion of their primary theological degree may be required to attend a seminar on study and writing techniques.
  • Applicants with a three year theology degree are required to have at least one year of ministry experience before enrolling in the course.
Advanced standing
  • If you have a four year Bachelor of Divinity (BD) you may be admitted with advanced standing of two units with a BD (Pass) or three units with a BD (Hons)
  • If you have completed research projects towards the MTh but you withdraw without completing the thesis you may be granted advanced standing of one MA (Theol) unit for each MTh research project. This is over and above any advanced standing you may be granted for your BD (Hons) degree (if applicable).
  • If you have completed research projects towards an MTh through an approved college affiliated with the ACT, but you withdrew without completing the thesis, you may be granted advanced standing of one MA (Theol) unit for each MTh research project completed.
  • You may be permitted to complete up to two units of study with approved colleges recognised by the ACT for MA (Theol) studies. Please apply to the Postgraduate Committee.
Provisional candidature
  • If you have a Bachelor of Theology at pass level you may be admitted as a provisional candidate depending on your results.
  • If you have an ACT ThL with merit or DipTh with merit and a secular degree you may be granted provisional candidature and be required to pass a bridging course. This will consist of two Level III BD units chosen from New Testament 3, Old Testament 3 and Theology 3. At least one of the Biblical subjects must be on the Hebrew or Greek text.
  • Provisional candidates must pass two units within the first two years of their MA(Theol) study for candidature to be confirmed by the Postgraduate Committee. This is to provide evidence of a candidate’s ability to perform at the level of a coursework masters.
