There were many opportunities across the Summer to delve deeply into God’s word partnered with the fellowship of meeting together with God’s people, often opportunities to reconnect with old friends, as well as chances to make new ones. College alumni, faculty and students both contributed and benefited from the Church Missionary Society (CMS) Summer Schools held in NSW and Queensland, with two Old Testament lecturers delivering the daily talks at these key events.
Andrew Shead, Head of Old Testament, spoke on Lamentations at the Queensland/Northern NSW CMS Summer School. A time of great encouragement for the delegates, as described by one “the best way to start the year!”
The 2026 CMS NSW/ACT Summer School, held in Katoomba early in January was a rich week of gathering around God’s word with Christians from across churches, ministries, and mission contexts. Through Bible talks, seminars, and shared conversations, participants were being encouraged and equipped for faithful Christian life and service.
Moore’s ongoing commitment to send men and women all around the world with the message of salvation found in Jesus was reflected during that week with the large numbers of alumni who gathered to listen and encourage each other, with those who are actively pursuing mission opportunities in remote regions of Australia and the world and with those who opened the Bible with the delegates and their children.
Dan Wu, Old Testament lecturer, delivered the daily Bible talks on Proverbs. Dan reminded listeners that Proverbs is not merely a collection of memorable lines, but God-given wisdom designed to shape us deeply. And that all this is ultimately fulfilled in Jesus, the perfect expression of God’s wisdom, but is now worked out in us as we are transformed by his Spirit.
Dan shared three practical ways to make the most of Proverbs:
- step into the proverb imaginatively and let it reshape how you think and live;
- read it relationally, asking how it helps us bring God’s blessing to one another;
- take your time with it because, as Dan puts it, “a proverb is a bit like a stock cube … designed to dissolve slowly and flavour everything richly.”
These talks were sprinkled with opportunities to hear from missionaries either working in the field or preparing to be sent. It was encouraging to see the number of these missionaries who are Moore alumni. Our graduates are scattered across the globe in places such as Bolivia, Argentina, South Africa, Namibia, France and Japan, and their message emphasised that gospel work continues wherever God’s people are being taught to live under Christ’s lordship.
At CMS NSW/ACT missionaries at different stages of service and transition shared part of their journey. Among them were Josh and Susannah Apieczonek, who have just finished their service with CMS in France as Josh prepares to take up the role of Head of Mission at Moore in 2026.
Transitioning out of leading the Mission Department at Moore Simon and Margie Gillham, reflected how they are preparing for ongoing CMS service in Uganda. Together, the contributions of the Gillhams and the Apieczoneks reflected the ongoing call to faithful service as God leads his people into new seasons of ministry.
A CMS NSW/ACT Summer School tradition has been established! College alumni met on Thursday afternoon at the Katoomba site for a joyful and encouraging reunion, celebrating shared history and God’s ongoing work through the College.
Alumni were invited to stand — and remain standing — as different Principals were named, visually marking the many eras represented in the room and the breadth of the Moore community across generations.
Tom Habib, New Testament lecturer, shared updates on recent developments in the College’s curriculum, particularly around the formation of students for faithful preaching and ministry. Mark Thompson reflected on life at the College today, including recent and upcoming appointments, and gave thanks for God’s continued provision and direction.
It was a rich time of connection, gratitude, and encouragement, a reminder of the enduring fellowship Moore College alumni share in the work of the gospel.
