Bachelor of Theology/Master of Theology (Coursework) (BTh/ThM)

Full time: 4 years Part Time only available in first year stage AQF 7/9 CRICOS Code: 041656J (BTh) / 111610F (ThM)

The Bachelor of Theology/Master of Theology (Coursework) (BTh/ThM) is the central award of the College and provides a biblical and theological foundation for those preparing for a lifetime of full-time Christian ministry.

It is a combined four-year undergraduate/postgraduate course. The BTh (AQF 7) course component provides breadth and depth in knowledge of theology and ministry. The ThM (AQF 9) course component enables students to demonstrate learning outcomes necessary for the ministry roles for which the College prepares graduates. In particular, the ThM will enable the College to produce graduates that apply critical thinking to theories of ministry practice, are able to engage with recent developments in scholarship and are positioned for further study or research. The document linked here provides an overview of the course and see also the course information detailed on this page below.

BTh/ThM Course Information for Students

Admission Requirements

Academic Admission Criteria

The normal academic entry requirement for this course includes a degree from an Australian university or its equivalent.

Applicant’s academic background:

  • Higher Education – An undergraduate degree in any field from an Australian university or equivalent qualification.
  • VET Study and Work and Life Experience – Enquiries are welcome from Australian residents without a university degree as mature age students may qualify by an entrance exam.
  • Recent Secondary Education (within the past two years) – Normally not applicable.

Other Admission Criteria

The College exists to prepare men and women for Christian ministry. In addition to the academic requirements, other criteria must be demonstrated for admission to the College. The criteria must be attested by personal references supplied by the applicant and will be evaluated by an admissions panel. An interview with the applicant is required.

  • Understanding of and aptitude for Christian leadership and ministry (including leadership potential, ministry experience, experience of sharing the knowledge of God and exemplary personal life consistent with the principles of the Anglican Church of Australia, Diocese of Sydney).
  • Theological understanding (including a basic understanding of the Christian gospel, general familiarity with the content of the Bible and the capacity to make theological connections to personal life).
  • Aptitude for community living (including emotional maturity and relationship skills).
  • A firm intention of engaging in Christian ministry (broadly defined) after graduation.

Progression from the BTh to ThM

Progression from the BTh into the ThM requires the successful completion of the BTh with a final weighted average mark of 60% or higher. Students enrolled in the BTh may transfer to the BTh/ThM at the end of second year or semester five (in third year) provided they meet the criteria for advancement. Progression from the BTh to the ThM requires that the student continues to meet and has shown development in the Other Admission Criteria stated above.

For full details see the Admissions Policy

English Language Proficiency

For those with a university degree in a language other than English, a certified copy of an IELTS score of at least 7 in all categories of the academic test, is required. TOEFL scores are also accepted.

Credit Transfer

Credit transfer may be available and is assessed in terms of the Academic Credit Policy, located on the Moore Policy website, and the Australian Qualifications Framework, Qualifications Pathways Policy.

Students who have completed the Moore College Advanced Diploma of Bible, Mission and Ministry (AdvDBMM) may apply for academic credit to continue their study in the second year of the BTh/ThM. To enter directly into the second year, AdvDBMM students must have passed Greek 1A, Greek 1B, and CT111 as electives. Transitioning from the AdvDBMM to the BTh or BTh/ThM requires the approval of the Academic Dean, who considers academic capability and the Other Admission Criteria of the BTh/ThM.

BTh/ThM Scholarships

Funds available for bursaries and scholarships are a scarce resource, and the following definitions apply:

  • a ‘Bursary’ is designed to support students in financial need, regardless of the course in which they are enrolled, and is particularly applicable to help such students pay their tuition fees (where they are not covered by FEE-HELP), and contribute if necessary towards their living expenses; and
  • a ‘Scholarship’ is based on merit, usually outstanding academic performance, and is particularly applicable to students undertaking research higher degrees.

Please note that, as a general principle, first year undergraduate students who are Australian citizens (and hence eligible for FEE-HELP) are not awarded bursaries except under special circumstances.

Bursaries for Students in financial need include:

  • General Bursary
  • Women’s Ministry Bursary
  • Indigenous Ministry Bursary
  • Global Ministry Bursary
  • International Student Bursary
  • Overseas DBT Bursary
  • PTC Bursary

Postgraduate Academic Scholarships include:

  • Moore College PhD Scholarship
  • Women’s Graduate Research Scholarship (The Parker Bequest)
  • Overseas Postgraduate Scholarship
  • Joan Augusta Mackenzie Travelling Scholarship

Bursary and Scholarship Applications

To apply for a bursary or a scholarship you will need to complete the following two forms in their entirety. Indigenous Australian Students

Moore College recognises Indigenous Australians as traditional custodians of this land under God’s good hand and is committed to seeing the work of the gospel thrive among Indigenous Australian communities. The Indigenous Australian Students webpage (Indigenous Australian Students (moore.edu.au)) includes additional information for Indigenous Australian students about admissions, available academic and wellbeing support, accommodation assistance, and Indigenous Australian student scholarships.

International Students

Moore College welcomes international students into its full-time courses.  The College does not use recruitment agents.

  • The academic year commences at the beginning of February and concludes at the end of November.
  • There are no mid-year intakes for overseas students studying undergraduate courses.
  • Postgraduate (Research) and MA (Theol) students may commence their course at other times.

Details regarding academic admission requirements for international students, see International Students.

Course Structure

The focus of the course is the knowledge and understanding of God revealed in Scripture. Three fields of study are designated, namely, Biblical Studies, Christian Thought and Christian Ministry. In keeping with its role in the determination of the subject-matter and the methodology of both Christian Thought and Christian Ministry, greater weight has been assigned to the fundamental field of Biblical Studies.

For the sixth semester of study, students electing to continue from the BTh to the ThM will undertake all units at AQF 8. Students exiting early with a BTh will complete a capstone unit with their remaining units assessed at AQF 7. Instead of the capstone, the BTh/ThM students take a unit in Christian Thought.

The course requires the completion of 48 Credit Points of study at each year of the course with 10 units in first year, 9 units in second year, and 8 units in the third and fourth year, with the exception of students who choose to do the major research project in fourth year, who take 6 units in their final year.

Work-integrated learning

The BTh/ThM incorporates work-integrated learning in two practicum units, in second year and fourth year. The practicums provide students with the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills they acquire in the course into ministry contexts. Each practicum is one semester in duration and typically involves work in a church as a student minister. Students will be supervised by an experienced member of the ministry team and will receive support from the College in the experience. Students will observe ministry in practice and be given opportunities to perform ministry that might include preaching, leading services, leading small groups, training lay leaders, and 1-on-1 personal ministry. Students will reflect on the ministry practice they observe as well as their own practice and receive feedback from their supervisor about their performance.

Articulation and early exit
  • ThM graduates at pass level may proceed to the College’s Master of Arts (Theology) (MA (Theol)).
  • ThM graduates with Honours 2A or above who completed the research project unit (CT499) may proceed to the College’s Master of Theology (Research) (MTh) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) course. Graduates with Honours 2A or above who completed Issues in Theology (CT400) instead of the research project unit (CT499) need to successfully complete a research task set by the Research Committee to be admitted to either the MTh or PhD.
  • Students that complete the first year of the BTh may be eligible to exit early and graduate with an Advanced Diploma of Theological Studies (CRICOS: 111612D). Students that complete the second year of the BTh may be eligible to exit early and graduate with an Associate Degree of Theology (CRICOS: 111611E).
  • BTh graduates may articulate to the College’s MA (Theology).
