Dr Colin Bale becomes Emeritus!

Dr Colin Bale becomes Emeritus!

June 4, 2021 by Ben George

At the end of this semester, Dr Colin Bale will retire from the Moore College faculty. Dr Bale was appointed to the faculty in 1999 and has served as head of the Church History department, Academic Dean, and Vice Principal. During some of that time he worked on his PhD at Sydney University in the area of Australian history, and more particularly the lessons to be learned from the gravestone inscriptions of those who fell in the First World War.

Dr Bale has made a remarkable contribution to the life and health of Moore College. In recognition of this, the Governing Board of the College has unanimously agreed to appoint him as an Emeritus Faculty member upon his retirement. With this appointment, he will join the likes of Dr Paul Barnett, Dr Peter Jensen, Dr Peter O’Brien, Dr David Peterson, and Dr Barry Webb. His continued connection with the College is eagerly anticipated by students and faculty alike.

Principal Dr Mark Thompson remarked,

“Colin has been a supportive colleague, a wonderful friend, a brilliant Vice Principal, but through it all a magnificent example of grace, humility and the steady confidence of one who knows and walks closely with the Lord Jesus. I have always valued his advice and will miss greatly his daily presence among us. I am thrilled he will continued to be connected to the College as an Emeritus Faculty member.”

At his official farewell with students at chapel today, so many people had so much to say about the impact that Dr Bale has had on their lives, and his impact on the College community more generally.

Jane Tooher, who was a student with Dr Bale and has worked alongside him as a colleague for 12 years on faculty, commented: “When I asked 2 men from our college year their thoughts about Colin and anything they thought I should include in this speech, this is what one said: ‘The three words that come to me are steady, warm and wise.'”

She made mention of Dr Bale’s love, respect and fondness for his wife Gillian (pictured below), his love for his children and delighting in spending time with them, humility, excellent sense of humour, his gentleness and grace in dealing with others, and so much more.

Jesse Morrison, senior student at College, asked students for a word to describe Dr Bale. They came up with “Father figure, grandfather, story-time, moustache, cheeky and sassy.” Jesse himself also remarked that “[Dr Bale] is unmistakably on fire for the gospel.”

College alumnus and friend of Dr Bale, Caitlin Orr, also had nothing but positive things to say about him. She remarked, “[Dr Bale is] not only a teacher, but a pastor at heart… [he] cares deeply for the people God has placed under [him].”

Dr Bale commented that “he [has] had a hoot being at College.” He also echoed the sentiments he heard at the 30-year alumni reunion, saying that it was a great joy to be part of College, where he too learned to think theologically in every situation, and make everything all about Jesus.

Please join us in thanking God for, and praying for Dr Bale.

If God is against us, what can we do?

June 1, 2021 by Ben George

In the book of Lamentations, and as we trace the suffering motif throughout the rest of the Scriptures, one thing is clear: God is sovereign, and so our suffering doesn’t happen unbeknownst to him. In fact, it is quite the opposite.

The Importance of Fellowship

May 27, 2021 by Archie Poulos

In Sydney, our evangelical theology is one where we treasure the local parish and congregation. This is an absolutely right thing to do at a scriptural level but we need to recognise that there is also a bigger fellowship that occurs between like–minded people.

The Importance of the Gospel

May 25, 2021 by Mark Earngey

Where would you be without the gospel? I shudder to think of where my life would have headed without it, and it horrifies me to hypothesise about a future without it.

Moore College welcomes Kanishka & Cailey Raffel

May 7, 2021 by Ben George

Moore College welcomes the election of the new Archbishop of Sydney, Kanishka Raffel. Kanishka is married to Cailey and they have two adult daughters, Hannah and Lucy. He is a graduate of the College having studied here from 1992–1995. While exercising a powerfully effective ministry at St Matthew’s Wanniassa in Canberra (1996–99) and St Matthews’ Shenton Park in Perth (1999–2015), he completed a MA (Theol) from the College as well (2010). Since returning to Sydney as Dean of Sydney in 2016, Kanishka and Cailey have been frequent visitors to the College.

Kanishka is well known to Moore College faculty, students and alumni as an outstanding preacher and a national evangelical leader. His determination to live under the authority of God’s word, to preach the gospel of redeeming love in Jesus Christ, and to encourage others in the exercise of the ministry gifts with which the Lord has endowed them, has been evident throughout his ministry.

“It is a particular delight and a cause of great thankfulness that the Lord has given us Kanishka as our next Archbishop”, commented the College Principal, Dr Mark Thompson. “His commitment to the work of the College is undoubted and his own preaching, teaching and pastoral ministry is an inspiration to many. We look forward to partnership on a new level as he takes over from Archbishop Davies as the President of the Moore College Governing Board. We look forward, too, with great excitement to the continuing ministry of Cailey among the women of the College.”

“Our brother has accepted a difficult role at a challenging time in history. Please join us in praying that our Lord would empower Kanishka to defend the faith boldly and commend Christ winsomely, to lead with great wisdom and integrity, and through every circumstance to grow in perseverance, character, hope, and love.”
– Andrew Shead, Head of Old Testament

“God in his kindness has given us Kanishka Raffel for our next Archbishop for which I am deeply thankful. I first met Kanishka and Cailey in 1993 at Moore College, and since then, they have consistently been a source of joy to me because of their love of God’s purposes and plans, their love for God’s word, their dependence on God in prayer, and their faithfulness to the gospel of Jesus Christ. In both of their ministries they demonstrate a deep love for the church and for the lost. It was a privilege to have Cailey speak at the 2021 Priscilla & Aquila Centre conference where her love for the lost was once again evident. She is a very able speaker who demonstrates great pastoral insight and wisdom. When speaking one to one with Cailey, you always feel she is listening to you, that she loves and cares for you, and that her confidence is in God’s word. It has been excellent to work alongside Kanishka for many years now with The Gospel Coalition Australia Council. In meetings, he brings a deep understanding of what matters most, an ability and a desire to listen and learn from others, and he has a great and appropriate sense of humour about himself and others. He is also able to see the gifts of others and rejoice in them. All these things make it great to be in a team with him. I very much look forward to having him as our next Archbishop, and I am very pleased this means he will have even more to do with Moore College than he already does.”
– Jane Tooher, Director of the Priscilla and Aquila Centre

Take the time to watch synod pray for Kanishka and Cailey, and listen to Kanishka addressing the synod, published by Sydney Anglican Media.
