Emily Gilmour

Emily Gilmour

December 9, 2024 by Moore College

Graduated 2009.

Emily had the privilege of knowing God from a very young age, with strong role models at church, active discipleship mentors as a young teenager and participation in university ministry, God directed Emily’s path to full-time theological education. God has continued to surprise Emily in the direction that he has taken her. With eyes originally set on doing mission work out of Australia Emily and her husband Stephen have found themselves working as parish missionaries in South Sydney at Sans Souci Anglican Church.

Brian Hall

December 9, 2024 by Moore College

Graduated 2009.

Brian’s road to Christ started with a street fight (as a youngster!) and ended with his opponent inviting him to youth group! The faithfulness of the teaching at youth group helped Brian discover the Bible, discover who God was, his own place in the world and what Jesus had done for him. Since College Brian has worked in a number of parishes across Sydney, from the south, to the west and now in the north, at Hornsby. Today Brian is welcoming people from all different places and backgrounds into God’s community at Hornsby.

Dr Veronica Hoyt joins the Moore College Faculty

November 25, 2024 by Moore College

On Friday evening the Governing Board approved the Principal’s nomination of Dr Veronica Hoyt to become a member of the Moore College Faculty. Veronica will take up the post of Lecturer in Ministry and Director of the Priscilla and Aquila Centre. Veronica and her husband Berwyn are members of St Thomas’ North Sydney where she has been the Women’s Minister.

Veronica has been a High School and TAFE teacher, and has served on the staff of Cornerstone Church in Christchurch New Zealand for ten years. She has a doctorate in English literature from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand and a Master of Theological Studies from Queensland Theological College. Her research for that degree was on “Complementarian Theology and Practice in Women’s Ministry across Australia and New Zealand”. She lists one of her hobbies and interests as ‘catching up with friends in quirky coffee shops’, so Newtown should be right up her alley!

The College Principal, Dr Mark Thompson welcomed Veronica’s appointment. “Veronica is just the person to build on the truly remarkable work started by Jane Tooher as the inaugural Director of the Priscilla and Aquila Centre. She has a delightfully warm Christian character, and significant experience in parish ministry both in New Zealand and Australia that, combined with her academic and teaching experience, makes her an ideal person to join the Faculty in this role.”

Veronica says, “It’s an honour to be joining the staff at Moore College. I have admired and respected Jane’s work at the College for a long time, and I am looking forward to building on the legacy that she leaves. Please pray for this season of transition, and that it would be used by God to advance his good purposes.”

Veronica will start at the College in mid-January 2025.

Tony Payne returns as Director of the Centre Christian Living

October 31, 2024 by Moore College

The College is pleased to announce that as part of his role as Lecturer in Christian Thought (Ethics), the Rev Dr Tony Payne will also resume Directorship of Moore College’s Centre for Christian Living (CCL).

Tony previously served as CCL Director from 2014 to 2019 while completing his PhD on the theological nature, purpose and practice of the “one-another edifying speech” in Christian community in the New Testament, while also continuing his work with Matthias Media. From 2020 until now, he served as ministry trainer and writer-in-residence with Campus Bible Study (CBS) at the University of New South Wales.

Under Tony’s leadership, CCL launched the popular Centre for Christian Living podcast, which seeks to bring biblical ethics to a range of everyday issues explored in interviews and audio from recent Moore College events, and which is listened to by Christians all over the world. He also organised and chaired a series of interesting seminars on a range of significant issues, including Islam, same-sex marriage and the Holy Spirit.

Of Tony’s appointment, CCL Acting Director Peter Orr said, “It’s exciting to see Tony return to direct the CCL. His previous experience in the role, together with his insight into the Scriptures, mean he is well-equipped to ensure the CCL continues helping Christians apply biblical ethics to everyday issues.”

Principal Mark Thompson added, “I am very excited for the next chapter in the life of the Centre for Christian Living. Tony Payne returning as its Director is an excellent development.”

Of his return, Tony says,

I’m very much looking forward to taking up the helm at CCL again. It will be like coming home after a long journey overseas: everything will seem very familiar and yet somehow different—not so much because CCL has really changed, but because I’ll be looking at it with fresh eyes. I’m hoping it will be an opportunity to rethink and reenergise the excellent work that CCL has been doing in bringing the truth and goodness of God to the everyday issues we face as his people in the world.

Please thank God for Peter and his time with CCL, and pray for Tony as he steps back into the role of CCL Director.

CCL events for 2025 will be announced soon.

Faith lessons from Melanesia

October 14, 2024 by Susan An

In April, I had the privilege of being invited to visit the Anglican Diocese of Central Melanesia (which comprises the Solomon Islands’ capital Honiara and its surrounds) as part of Moore College’s annual mission. Over 10 days, our group of 12 – myself, the Rev Dr Mark Earngey and 10 students – attended multiple church services and visited Anglican schools, as well as
Bishop Patteson Theological College.
